Even if you are a cautious driver, not everyone else is, which means that accidents can and will happen at some stage. It’s essential to know what to do if you are involved in an accident so that you can act calmly and rationally and resolve things as soon as possible.

Below is a checklist to help minimise stress after an accident, and to make it much easier to claim from your accident insurance:

1. Stop at the scene

If your accident has caused injury or damage to vehicles, people or property, stop your car. It is a legal offence not to stop.

2. Accidents happen

Try to stay calm and don't lose your temper. Even if you think the accident may have been your fault, never admit blame at the scene of the accident or offer any form of settlement.

3. Ensure the scene is safe

Switch off your engine; turn on your hazard warning lights and alert oncoming traffic about the accident.

4. Injuries

Call the police if someone is injured, if the collision has caused a hazardous situation, or if someone leaves the scene without exchanging details. If you're unsure about whether to call the police or not, rather call them and they can advise on the best course of action.

5. Accident pack

Always carry an accident pack in your car with you, consisting of a notebook, pen and a cellphone with a camera on it.

In the event of an accident, sketch the scene. Remember to note as many details as you can, such as street names, vehicle locations, direction of travel, skid marks, collision points and vehicle damage. Use the camera for picture evidence of the road layout, position of vehicles and the damage that happened.

6. Exchange information

All drivers involved must exchange details as instructed by law. Ask for names, addresses, telephone numbers (cellphone and home) and car insurance details. You must also provide this information about yourself.

7. Other information

Record any other details you think may be important. Examples include if someone used a cellphone while driving, if you suspect the other driver has been drinking, or if there are adverse weather conditions.

8. Notify your accident insurance company

Notify your car insurance company immediately of any accident you are involved in, regardless of whose fault it was or whether or not a claim is to be made. Give them all the details, notes, sketches, photographs and anything else you think necessary.

Unfortunately, car accidents do happen, but you can take these steps to ease the hassle of sorting it all out.

You should also read through your accident insurance policy carefully to check what is covered – such as replacement vehicles or personal injury cover – so that no eventuality is overlooked.
