A useful checklist

Although this won't help with the emotional stress you are experiencing, it may take some of the pressure off in a difficult time.

  • Collect personal information to compile an obituary
  • Choose a funeral home
  • Choose whether the deceased will be buried or cremated
  • Select a casket or cremation container
  • Choose the funeral location and type of funeral service
  • Decide what the deceased will wear
  • Select the music for the funeral service and choose readings for the service
  • Arrange for funeral transportation (funeral coach, limousine or clergy car)
  • Select who you want to be the pallbearers and which family member or friend is going to perform the eulogy
  • Choose a cemetery (if not already chosen by the deceased) and a burial/cremation plot
  • Submit the obituary to the appropriate newspapers

There are a number of things to consider that can't be arranged before someone passes away, such as applying for death certificates and a burial permit.

Other considerations that are less crucial to the planning process include matters such as flower arrangements, jewellery of the deceased, memorial cards and accommodating of guests. These are important but someone else can perform them.

The funeral planning process is very difficult for just one person to take on. If you come together and support each other and make sure you each contribute your part to the planning process, it takes the burden off just one person.
